Starlink’s First Nationwide Satellite Texting Service Launches in New Zealand

In a significant milestone for SpaceX’s satellite-to-cell Starlink service, One NZ has announced that it is the first telecommunications company globally to power a nationwide satellite text messaging service via Starlink. This achievement marks a major breakthrough in the development of satellite-based communication technology.

Partnerships and Global Reach

Starlink has already signed up partners in several countries, including Canada, Australia, Japan, Peru, Switzerland, and Chile. Additionally, the company has partnered with T-Mobile in the US, paving the way for widespread adoption of its satellite-to-cell service. This international collaboration demonstrates the growing interest in Starlink’s technology and its potential to revolutionize global communication networks.

Device Compatibility

However, there are some limitations to the current rollout. Currently, only four phone models are supported: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and OPPO Find X8 Pro. Eligibility for this service is expected to expand to more devices next year, making it accessible to a broader range of users.

Initial Rollout and Performance

During the initial rollout, most text messages can be sent and received within three minutes, according to One NZ. However, during the first few months, this may increase to 10 minutes or longer due to the ongoing testing and optimization process. In an interview, One NZ’s Experience and Commercial Director Joe Goddard explained that the service is still in its initial phase and will continue to improve over time.

"We continue to test the capabilities of One NZ Satellite TXT, and this is an initial service that will get better," said Goddard. "For example, text messages will take longer to send but will get quicker over time."

Staggered Rollout and Future Developments

As part of the staggered rollout, a small number of phones are currently supported. This approach allows for a more controlled and efficient implementation process, ensuring that the technology is thoroughly tested before expanding its reach.

In the future, One NZ plans to offer voice calling and data services in addition to text messaging. This will further enhance the capabilities of the Starlink service, making it an even more comprehensive and reliable solution for global communication needs.

Pricing and Accessibility

The One NZ Satellite TXT service will be free for existing customers on paid-monthly plans. However, it remains unclear whether new customers or those on other contracts will be required to pay an additional fee to access satellite-to-cell coverage.

Previous Pilots and Future Developments

Starlink’s text-by-satellite service was previously piloted with T-Mobile customers in areas affected by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in October. The success of this pilot program paved the way for T-Mobile’s FCC approval in November, clearing the path for its US Starlink beta program to proceed.

In the coming months, T-Mobile plans to sign up customers to test the US Starlink beta program "early next year." This will mark a significant step forward in the development and deployment of Starlink’s technology, further expanding its reach and capabilities.

Conclusion

The achievement of nationwide coverage in New Zealand marks a major milestone for SpaceX’s Starlink service. With partnerships established across the globe and ongoing developments in device compatibility, this satellite-to-cell service is poised to revolutionize global communication networks.

As One NZ continues to refine and expand its services, users can expect even faster message delivery times and more comprehensive features in the future. The potential of Starlink’s technology is vast, and its impact on the world of telecommunications will undoubtedly be significant.
